Launch Sinks in Padma River With Over 250 Passengers

MUNSHIGANJ: A launch with over 250 passengers on board capsized in the River Padma near Mawa Ghat under Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj on Monday. Two bodies of unidentified women were recovered while many people went missing until filing of this report at 9pm.

Mawa Highway Traffic Inspector Shahdat Hossain said the Mawa-bound ‘Pinak-6′ launch caught in the strong current soon after sailing and sank in the mid-river at around 11am.

The overloaded launch, left from Kawrakandi ghat, met the tragic accident at Hajra point.

It is not clear how many passengers are being carried by the accident-ridden launch and rescued. Rescuers say that the salvage operation is being disrupted due to strong currents. Locals had immediately started rescue work with trawlers and speedboats. Later, the coast guard and fire service joined them.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered authorities concerned to start all out effort to recover launch Pinak-6. In the meantime, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan reached the spot as per order of PM.

Allude to, police recovered bodies of two women from the Padma river after a launch, Pinak-6, carrying more than 250 passengers, capsized on Mawa-Kawrakandi route in the district in the morning.

Besides, at least 40 passengers were rescued from the river and many more remained missing.
